Padmavati turned Padmavat, and is finally going to hit theatres on 25th January. After a lot of protest, and reportedly after 300 scene cuts, the film is up for a release finally. Whether there is any changes in “Padmavat” after the “i” cut can only be known once the film is released. However, such name changing tradition after controversies is not new in Bollywood. There are several other instances as well when a movie has been released after modifications in its original name. Given below are some of such movies.
Ram Leela to Goliyon Ki Raas Leela- Ram Leela:
This is another Sanjay Leela Bhansali film that stirred controversy. Though the film didn’t have to change its release schedule initially, but had to face a lot of chaos due to its religious name. It too stars Deepika and Ranveer Singh in leads. The film was allowed to release after being named “Goliyon Ki Raas Leela” from simply “Ram Leela”.
Main Hoon Rajnikanth turned Main Hoon Part Time Killer:
The title indeed sounds weird, but it had no other option. As evident from the name, it’s a spoof film. It had to release in 2014 initially, but got postponed due to huge protest after Rajnikanth complained in Madras High Court regarding the usage of his name in the movie. After a lot of protest, the film finally got released on 22nd May 2015. Directed by Faisal Saif, the movie casts Adithya Menon, Reema Lagoo, Shakti Kapoor, and Kavitha Radheshyam in various roles.
Rambo Raj Kumar turned R Rajkumar:
R..Rajkumar is the first film of Shahid Kapoor prior Padmavati that had to get its title changed. The film faced issues due to “Rambo” in its name as the makers of “Rambo series” had the copyright for the word “Rambo”. Anyway, the change in name didn’t affect its box office performance. In fact, it revived Shahid Kapoor’s career after a much needed box-office hit.
Jaffna turned Madras Cafe:
John Abraham’s well acclaimed, national award winning (in best audiography, sound design, and sound recording) movie Madras Cafe was initially titled Jaffna. Jaffna is a northern Srilankan city. Due to such naming and sensitivity, the movie had to be presented as a work of fiction with name change. In fact, the original location of the movie has not been cited.
Billu Barber turned Billu:
This is one among the very few failures of superstar Shahrukh Khan. “Barber” from the title had to be trimmed after a lot of protest from a particular society. Though Shahrukh has a guest appearance in it, but being produced by him and for his significant involvement, it’s moreover known as a Sharukh Khan film. It casts Irfan Khan and Lara Dutta in lead.
Apart from these, Yungistaan too faced a lot of protest, but its name wasn’t changed. Similarly, Ajay Devgan starrer ”Action Jackson” had to confront a huge protest as there is a movie in Hollywood with same name. Action Jackson couldn’t do well in box office as well.
