India is really a strange nation; everything has a space here. People here shout against corruption, and still the leaders like Lalu Yadav win. Here honesty is as established as corruption. Similar is the case about Bollywood as well; here movies like Black, Masan, etc co-exist among the likes of Happy New Year, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, etc. People praise movies like Black, and flicks like Happy New Year earn moolah. It’s a perfect balance you can say. No one complains really; after all, cinema is an industry; so many people are dependent upon it for their bred butter. It’s good if it earned. Well, amidst the cold war between content and commercial success, Bollywood has managed some great stuffs like PK, 3 Idiots, Munna Bhai, Rang De Basanti, Gangs of Wasseypur, Jolly LLB, etc, those are just perfect. The mentioned above names are content driven, represent high cinematic value, creativity, and hold the entertainment value as well to make commercial hits.
KJO and the Kalakaars:
Credit goes to the people behind, be it about Anurag Kashyap or Raju Hirani. It’s a good feeling for any cinema lover to see that people have started reckoning the creative people or men of content these days. Well, it doesn’t mean I have all issues against the likes of Karan Johar or Aditya Chopra. They are special people. To be specific, only KJo knows how to make audience sit for 2:30 hours with just any random story like you see in daily soaps. Reviews are not good, true critics are never really satisfied, still, it works. People accept his movies are stupid, no-brainer in the name of entertainment, yet watch. That’s the magic; that’s the specialty of Karan Johar who can make a movie hit powered by big start cast, glitz, promotion, emotion, and all. Again, don’t misunderstand me that I am a KJO hater; I am not a fool to hate anyone. I commend KJO for such talent of him.
But, I call the likes of Kashyap as the artists, the Kalakaars, and the likes of KJO, the business maker of cinemas. Both are damn required for the industry; and it’s this diversity that makes Bollywood great
It hurts, when people try to follow KJO’s method like a hit formula, simply because it works for him! Especially, the likes of Imtiaz Ali, whom I would keep within the bracket of creative bunch like Kashyap or Hirani as mentioned above. What was Harry Met Sejal? Shouldn’t it be called something similar as of KJO, banking on star cast, song, emotion, romance, etc? KJO still stitches story; no matter something only he can think. But, frankly speaking, Harry Met Sejal is having nothing. It’s like Mr. Ali observed KJO’s success formula and presented in his way, with a lot of sightseeing, fun, and romance. We had songs, romance, catchy sightseeing in JHMS as well, just like every other Imtiaz Ali movie (be it about Highway, Rockstar, etc). But, his honest fans were really missing the incredible Imtiaz Ali story portrayal. Be it about ‘Ikko hi Kahani bas badle Jamana’ in Love AAj Kal or the life lesson in Jab We Met, there always remains something charming that makes his film satisfying. What’s there in JHMS? Simply void..!!
It’s an honest request Mr. Ali, please don’t try to be commercial; you can’t. You are what you are. You can’t be Karan Johar. Moreover, please understand that people won’t accept if you try so. When it comes about an Imtiaz Ali movie, people visit theaters to watch Imtiaz Ali’s work; no matter B-town’s biggest superstar is there. You used to be the hero of your movie, and those have done well. This time you kept your focus on SRK, and it bombed. At least, please don’t disappoint the true cinema lovers, who actually observe the creativity, reckon the technical works, story, etc. Especially, in that phase of time when content driven flicks like Hindi Medium, Mom, etc have managed to stand out, or when people have started reckoning the class over commercial formula.
