People might have different opinions regarding tolerance of India, but it is the country where a filmmaker can dare to make movies against the nation itself or anything in relation with national interest. Neel Akasher Neechey:
This Bengali movie was made in 1959, directed by Mrinal Sen. Its star cast includes names like Kali Bannerjee, Manju Dey, and others. The movie was banned for a couple of months due to political protests. The movie showed the issues faced by a Chinese worker in Kolkata, after immigrating in 1930.
This 1971 directed by Satyajit Ray is based on the formation of Sikkim. It was commissioned by the king of the state for allegedly putting sovereignty of Sikkim under threat by both India, as well as China. However, the ban from the movie was lifted in 2010.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom:
Though the movie has bagged various awards, but was banned for wrong depiction of India. Various scenes were found absolutely objectionable. To be specific, the scenes where the characters are served monkey brains created a lot of rage. This is a 1984 American movie of adventure genre, directed by popular director Steven Spielberg. The banned Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom is the second installment of it. It is the prequel to the 1981 movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. It was alleged then that certain scenes are exaggeratedly presented. Especially, the issues of child labor, black magic, human sacrifice, etc were exaggeratedly presented. In addition, goddess Kali was also depicted in a controversial way in the movie.
Water is another award winning movie that was banned in India. It was directed by Deepa Mehta. The film’s screenplay was given by another popular director Anurag Kashyap, and was written by Deepa Mehta. The movie set in 1938 was opposed for wrong depiction of Indian cultures. It is based on the life of a widow at an ashram in India. In fact, its sets were also vandalized during the shoots. The movie has John Abraham, Lisa Ray, Seema Biswas, Vinay Pathak, and others in various roles.
This is the most recent name in the list. Mohalla Assi is another controversial movie that too was banned. In fact, CBFC denied to rate the movie. The movie is based on the commercialization of the pilgrimage in the spiritual city of Varanasi. It was alleged that the movie shows commercialization of pilgrimage in an exaggerated fashion. However, the movie was allowed to release in December, 2017 by Delhi High court after removing one scene. It was released with adult certification later. The movie stars popular actors like Sunny Deol, Ravi Kishan, Sakshi Tanwar, Mukesh Tiwari, and others. It is directed by Chandraparakash Dwivedi, and produced by Crossword Entertainment Pvt Ltd.
