When it comes about Ramdev’s political links, one would easily visualise BJP; it’s quite ordinary. However, someone who knows Ramdev to the core would say that he is a real businessman; staying well above the party. His swadeshi stance, Hindutva image, etc might connect him with BJP in present scenario, but someone who knows Ramdev from close may not agree with the same. In fact, the similarity between the politicians and the businessmen is that they don’t have any fixed ideology; a politician’s only ideology is power, and a businessman’s is money.
Coming to the topic about Ramdev’s political connection, someone who sees politics from very close would say that it’s actually Congress that holds prime role in establishing Ramdev as a businessman; not BJP. In fact, BJP has never given any kind of facility to Ramdev, from business point of view; no matter political slogans match for both up to some extent. Rather, Samajwadi Party has helped Ramdev greatly. It was Mulayam Singh Yadav who gave Ramdev all sorts of confidence for growing his business, during the early days. In fact, Mulaym had proposed Ramdev to establish his clinics in the township that the then Uttar Pradesh government was planning to build. Though the plan couldn’t happen, but bonding between Mulayam and Ramdev certainly grew. Mulayam ensured minimal governmental complexities with Ramdev’s endeavors.
In fact, it’s Mulayam Singh through which Ramdev got closer to Congress leader ND Tiwary. And, Ramdev’s fortune changed significantly when UPA returned in to power in the year 2004. In fact, popular Hindutva leadership figures like Ramdev being with closer to Congress and SP is said to be one of the reasons why BJP lost 2004 general election. Both Ramdev and Congress were quite loyal to each other during the first term of UPA led government.
Post a couple of months of UPA’s rule, Subodh Kant Sahay became the minister of state for food processing industries. Suddenly a new bill was passed as per which a single regulatory authority controlled the entire food processing industry. As per the new rule, the government would overhaul the entire other eight laws. In addition, a new legislation on packaging and labelling was introduced.
Moreover, the then government planned to establish 500 food parks. Huge amount of budgets was sanctioned too in this regard. As per this plan, every state had to get food parks; but reality of which is known to everyone. But, what made everyone astonished is that the first state to receive the sanctions (in fact, practically the only one) was Uttarakhand. In fact, ten food parks were proposed to be established in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Now, keeping in view the sweet relationship of Ramdev with Mulayam Singh Yadav and other Congress leader, it’s not at all surprising to see why Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh were given such importance, in comparison to other states those still haven’t got any scope. This was the phase Ramdev was initiating his new Patanjali Food processing unit and Patanjali Hospital. It was the phase when Ramdev was stepping in to the FMCG industry.
And, the rest is history.
